About
IllustrAI is a project that explores the growing influence of artificial intelligence and what this means for illustrators. In a world where AI is taking on an increasingly prominent role, many illustrators are experiencing growing anxiety about what this will mean for their position and future within the creative industry.
It is essential that people become more aware of how they use AI. When artwork is generated by AI, it can come at the expense of illustrators whose skills and creativity risk being overlooked. What many people don’t realize is that AI models are trained on datasets that are often built from existing works. These works are incorporated into the datasets without the explicit consent of the illustrators who created them.
Therefore, raising awareness among AI users is crucial—understanding what AI is built upon and recognizing the impact it can have on creators. The project highlights the importance of this awareness and aims to encourage more thoughtful and responsible use of AI in the field of illustration.
The installation

IllustrAI is a critical installation that invites people to share photos. It presents itself as an exhibition by an illustrator asking visitors for inspiration. Participants are encouraged to upload a photo from their phone that represents a personal memory. Once uploaded, the photo is automatically transformed into an illustration and printed without the user’s explicit consent, and then displayed in the exhibition. By experiencing how their personal memory is taken and reused, visitors gain awareness of what it feels like for illustrators when their work is used without permission.
